Book Launch: New Perspectives on Islam in Africa
Presentation by Roman Loimeier (University of Göttingen) and Abdoulaye Sounaye (ZMO)

Roughly a third of the Muslim world population lives in Africa. The continent plays an important role for the early history of Islam. The very complexity of Islam in Africa manifests itself, to name just one example among many, in the numerous Sufi orders followed by many Africans. In recent times orthodox and fundamentalist groups seem to gain ground in Africa. In a double book launch Abdoulaye Sounaye (ZMO) and Roman Loimeier (University öf Göttingen) will present their recently published books on Islamic reform movements and their influences on politics and society.

The event is organized by the Gesellschaft zur Förderung des ZMO e.V. Please find more information in the invitation flyer and in our German press release.

Since the nineteenth century the history of Hong Kong’s Muslims, as a minority in a Chinese-dominated and religiously diverse society could be more appropriately conceptualized as “hijra”...

Security, Dispossession and Industrial Food Production in Turkey

Presentation by Sezai Ozan Zeybek (Bilgi University Istanbul) as part of the Urban Studies Seminar 2016-2017

The successive waves of de-ruralisation have had a massive impact on both the rural and urban settings in Turkey. Austerity policies imposed on agriculture, transfer of commonly held pastures to mining compa - nies in the name of “public benefit” and the forced internal displace - ment of over one million (mostly Kurdish) villagers by the state in the 1990s for “security reasons” have massively accelerated the process. In this talk, I will disentangle the ways in which markets, states and su - pranational institutions intervene in ecological networks and production regimes in order to increase and accelerate capital accumulation, par - ticularly in conflict zones...
